Main Thing #3: Just How Big Is Jesus?

Those who have been closest to God have said, perhaps more than those who are far from him, how infinite and hard to grasp he is. We get a clear picture of him in Jesus Christ, but the temptation is to make him smaller than he is. If he is truly the “Main Thing” in Scripture, we would expect big things to be said about him. Let’s explore, and see what it means for us.

Matthew 5:17-18; John 8:53-58; Colossians 1:15-17
Matthew 5:17-18 / New International Version (NIV)

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

John 8:53-58 / New International Version (NIV)

53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”

57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

Colossians 1:15-17 / New International Version (NIV)

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
