Poor in Spirit

Poor in Spirit

Welcome! Join us here for our service at 10AM on Sunday, 1/4.

The Beatitudes… Jesus’ first teachings. The first words from your rabbi are important. They set the priority for his disciples to follow. Jesus’ teaching was counter to the culture of his day, and was a call for God’s people to return to their roots of being a people set apart. His kingdom would be an upside down one from the culture, then and for our culture today. In the new year, we return to the first teachings in order to learn how to be a people set apart testifying to the good news found in Jesus.

Matthew 5:3-10

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
    for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
