Discipleship Sunday is designed to be hands-on and multigenerational—full of participation, questions, curiosity, and conversation. As we continue our series, “The Beatitudes” (Matthew 5:2–10), we’ll focus on Matthew 5:7 and the gift (and challenge) of mercy. We’ll name the weight we carry when we don’t offer mercy to others, and when we’re slow to accept the mercy God offers us for our sin.

Matthew 5:2-10

and he began to teach them.

The Beatitudes

He said:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
    for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
